XFL reveals team names for relaunch in February

Former Alabama State standout and coach Reggie Barlow will serve as the head coach of the DC Defenders when the XFL relaunches next year.

The XFL revealed its slate of head coaches in April and its franchise locations in July, and on Monday, the spring football league unveiled its team names.

The Defenders are one of the three teams returning with its entire identity from the XFL’s 2020 season, which ended halfway through the 10-week schedule.

Also returning are the Houston Roughnecks and the St. Louis Battlehawks.

Three teams have recycled mascots but different locations. One is only a slight change: The Dallas Renegades are now the Arlington Renegades. The Guardians will be in Orlando instead of New York, and it’ll be the Vegas Vipers instead of the Tampa Bay Vipers.

Seattle altered its nickname from the Dragons to the Sea Dragons.

The only completely new franchise is the San Antonio Brahmas. The 2020 team completely missing from the 2023 XFL is the Los Angeles Wildcats.

The 2023 franchises in Las Vegas and Orlando mark a return to the XFL for those cities. They hosted teams in the original XFL’s only season in 2001 as the Las Vegas Outlaws and Orlando Rage. The other XFL teams in 2001 were the Birmingham Thunderbolts, Chicago Enforcers, Los Angeles Xtreme, Memphis Maniax, New York/New Jersey Hitmen and San Francisco Demons.

The XFL has reorganized under new ownership, including wrestler and movie star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, for a relaunch on Feb. 18.

Like the USFL, which practiced and played all its regular-season games in Birmingham in 2022, the XFL also will use a hub format, with its teams practicing in Arlington, Texas. But unlike the USFL, the XFL teams will play in the cities for which they are named with true home and away schedules.

The XFL plans a draft in November, but the specific date and format for the event have not been announced.

XFL games will be televised on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and FX.
