Woman indicted on murder charge in 2015 decapitation, dismemberment of Prichard man

A Mobile County grand jury indicted a 38-year-old woman this month on murder and other charges in the 2015 decapitation and dismemberment of a Prichard man whose torso was found in a wooded area, prosecutors said Tuesday.

April Jonquil Gibbs was indicted in the death of 33-year-old Larry James Bradford, who was reported missing by his family on Aug. 11, 2015, the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Bradford’s body was found by an environmental officer on a routine patrol a week after his family filed a missing persons report.

His body was found on Velma Street, decapitated and with both legs and arms cut off, the DA’s office said at the time.

Gibbs was secretly indicted as part of a DA’s office task force that expedites arrests of dangerous defendants that allows their prosecutions to start much sooner, the office said.

The grand jury indicted her on murder after citing that she intentionally caused Bradford’s death. She was also charged with abuse of a corpse for allegedly dismembering and disposing Bradford’s torso in the woods.

She was given $200,000 bond on the murder charge and $15,000 bond on the abuse of corpse charge.

The Mobile County District Attorney’s Office Task Force has executed an arrest warrant on April Jonquil Gibbs.

A June 2023 Mobile County Grand Jury indicted April Jonquil Gibbs for Murder citing she did intentionally cause the death of Larry James Bradford. Gibbs is also charged with Abuse of Corpse and the indictment cites she did knowingly and willfully abuse the corpse of Larry James Bradford by, to-wit: dismembering parts of his body and/or disposing of his torso in the woods or and/or exposing his body to the elements and/or scattering his body parts.

On August 11, 2015, the family of Larry James Bradford reported him missing and then parts of his body were found a week later. Gibbs was given a $200,000.00 bond for the Murder charge and $15,000 for the Abuse of Corpse charge.

The DA task force was formed to expedite arrests on dangerous defendants who have been secretly indicted, beginning their prosecution in court much sooner than before. The task force will continue to identify and seek out the most dangerous defendants that are an immediate threat to the community who have active arrest warrants and existing court cases.
