What similarities do Jalen Hurts, Bryce Young share?

Miles Sanders served as Philadelphia’s No. 1 running back as the Eagles won the NFC championship and played in Super Bowl LVII last season.

This offseason, Sanders left Philadelphia for the Carolina Panthers as a free agent.

With the Eagles, Sanders played with quarterback Jalen Hurts. With the Panthers, Sanders is preparing to play with quarterback Bryce Young.

During a recent appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show,” Sanders noted the similarities of the former Alabama quarterbacks.

“Just how they approach the game – very businesslike,” Sanders said. “(Young) is there early, and he leaves late. He’s the last one to leave. He’s getting a good grip of the locker room already. He’s one of those guys who comes to work every day in a great mood but serious and all about his business. Those are the main two similarities with them.”

But Hurts and Young entered the NFL under different circumstances.

After three seasons at Alabama, Hurts transferred to Oklahoma and finished as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 2019. Philadelphia drafted Hurts in the second round in 2020 even though the Eagles had a four-year starter at quarterback beginning a big-money contract in Carson Wentz.

Hurts replaced Wentz as the Eagles’ starter with four games remaining in his rookie season.

In his second full season as the starter, Hurts finished second in the voting for The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player Award, made second-team All-Pro, was chosen for the Pro Bowl and became the first NFL quarterback with a passer rating of more than 100 to score at least 10 touchdowns as he helped Philadelphia set a team record for victories.

The Eagles fell to the Chiefs 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12, even though Hurts had 304 passing yards, a touchdown pass, 70 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. No other player in NFL history has reached those four stats in the same game.

Young won the 2021 Heisman Trophy and finished sixth in the voting for the 2022 award before entering the NFL as the first No. 1 selection from Alabama since Harry Gilmer in 1948.

The Panthers signed veteran quarterback Andy Dalton as a safety net for their prize rookie. But reports from Carolina’s offseason program indicated Young could be under center when the Panthers kick off the 2023 campaign against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 10.

“Bryce Young has looked very, very, very well to me,” Sanders said. “I don’t know what Nick Saban’s doing over there with them Bama guys, but he’s creating some very sharp guys. I look at him, and he’s very sharp and on it with everything. He’s there early; he leaves late. On the field, I’m talking to him, just telling him to take control of the offense, and I very well see that when we’re doing plays and going against the defense and stuff like that. His decision-making is smart. He doesn’t force anything really. His pocket presence is what really stands out to me, so the height doesn’t matter at all. I hope nobody’s worried about the height. I like him, and we got a bright future ahead of us. …

“It’s hard not to like him. He’s very humble. He knows he’s that guy, but he’s very humble with it.”

Carolina’s rookies are scheduled to report to training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on Saturday. The veterans come in three days later. The Panthers open their three-game preseason schedule with a home game against the New York Jets on Aug. 12.
