South Alabama, Troy both advance in Sun Belt softball tournament

Bailey Welch’s home run leading off the bottom of the 12th gave South Alabama a 2-1 victory over Louisiana-Monroe in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference softball tournament on Thursday in San Marcos, Texas.

The win lifts the third-seeded Jaguars (32-17-1) into a semifinal game at 7 p.m. Friday against the winner of Thursday’s late game between No. 2 Texas State and No. 10 Marshall. No. 1 Louisiana faces No. 5 Troy in the other semifinal game at 4 p.m. Friday.

On Thursday, the Warhawks (31-24) got Jacelyn Buck’s RBI double in the top of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead, then the Jaguars tied it on Samantha Willems’ run-scoring groundout in the sixth. The score remained 1-1 for 5 ½ innings, until Welch lifted a 3-1 pitch from ULM’s Gianna Hulett over the wall in left-center field for her third homer of the year and the walk-off win.

Olivia Lackie (23-7) pitched all 12 innings for South Alabama, allowing six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. She retired the last 10 hitters she faced after surrendering a two-out single in the top of the ninth.

Hulett (1-2) took the loss for ULM after allowing one run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings. Warhawks starter Maddie Nichols gave up a run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Olivia Brandstatter had three of South Alabama’s nine hits, all of which were singles other than Welch’s homer.

Troy 16, Coastal Carolina 0 (5 innings)

The fifth-seeded Trojans made a laugher of their tournament opener, scoring five runs in the third and fourth innings and four more in the fifth to win by run rule.

Libby Baker had a great day at the plate and in the circle for Troy, ripping a two-run homer and pitching a five-inning no-hitter. She struck out four and walked two in running her record to 15-11 this season.

Audra Thompson led the way for the Trojans (34-21) at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two homers, a double, four runs scored and five driven in. She doubled in the second, ripped a solo homer in the third, singled home a run in the third and bashed a 3-run homer in the fifth.

Troy totaled 17 hits in all, including doubles by Thompson, Jade Sinness, Anslee Finch and Natalie Turner. Sinness went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Finch was 2-for-4 and Turner 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

No. 4 Coastal Carolina (34-21) had just three baserunners, with only one advancing as far as second base. Riley Zana reached on an error in the fifth, while Maddy Jennings and Libby Pippin both walked in the second.

Baker retired the last 11 batters she faced to finish off the no-hitter.
