Rush Propst steps down as Pell City’s head football coach

Rush Propst has stepped down as Pell City’s head football coach after just one season.

Propst told AL.com late Friday afternoon he felt it was the right thing to do.

“It’s become a distraction here,” he said. “It’s not good for our kids. I feel like it’s the right thing to do. I’m always going to stand by my players and do the right thing for my players and, at this time, I feel this is the right time.”

A special meeting of the Pell City Board of Education was called late Friday afternoon to accept Propst’s resignation and the resignation of his wife Stefnie, a 12-month month secretary at the school.

On April 24 at another special called meeting, Propst survived an attempt to oust him as the team’s coach when no one on the board made a motion on an action item to non-renew his contract. Pell City went 1-9 in his first season with one forfeit but showed an improvement in competitiveness over 2022.
