Mobile animal rescues try to ‘clear the shelters’ amid rising numbers

In the month of August, animal shelters around Mobile stepped up their efforts to get pets adopted, particularly as the shelters deal with overcrowding.

Since the coronavirus pandemic, the Mobile Animal Shelter, like many of the other shelters in the area, has been “in a constant state of always being full,” Robert Bryant, city of Mobile director of Animal Services said. He’s not quite sure what the cause is.

“We’re just in a constant state of too many animals,” Bryant said. “This would be the time for the uptick.”

Right now would ordinarily be “puppy and kitten season,” after the breeding season in the spring and early summer. But now, Janine Woods, executive director of the Mobile SPCA, says that “puppy and kitten season” is year-round.

“When I started this, we had a puppy and kitten season. Now puppy and kitten season is all year round,” Woods previously told the Lede. “We’d say ‘okay, that time is kitten season,’ so we’d start getting geared up for it. Nope. It is 365 days out of the year, somebody might call you with a litter of kittens or a litter of puppies.”
