International Jazz Day: How to watch the global concert hosted by Herbie Hancock

Sérgio Mendes, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Marcus Miller are set to perform in an all-star celebration of jazz, hosted by Herbie Hancock.

Sunday, April 30 is International Jazz Day. Billed as a jazz journey around the world, the day of celebration is a collaboration between UNESCO and the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, featuring participation from more than 190 countries with a series of events, workshops, and video tributes from around the world.

Now in its 12th year, the International Jazz Day flagship event is the All-Star Global Concert featuring renowned artists from around the globe. This year’s lineup includes Somi (Rwanda), the Blue Note China Jazz Orchestra, and JazzWomenAfrica. (Read the full lineup on jazzday.com).

The All-Star Global Concert will be live-streamed worldwide at 3 p.m. EST on jazzday.com, unesco.org, the International Jazz Day YouTube and Facebook channels, and the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Facebook page.

“As the world’s largest, most inclusive celebration of jazz music, International Jazz Day unites people across the globe. Jazz has always been about expanding boundaries – inspiring musicians toward the future and its infinite possibilities,” Hancock said in a press release about this year’s events. “This year, we are thrilled that the All-Star Global Concert will reflect this expansive identity in a new way, by sharing with our audience a rich palette of sounds on more than a dozen stages in every corner of the planet.”

April is also Jazz Appreciation Month. Created in 2001 by the Smithsonian Institute, the month-long tribute celebrates the heritage and history of jazz.
