Florida skydiver dies in ‘hard landing’ when parachute malfunctions

A skydiver was killed in a “hard landing” after his parachute malfunctioned, according to a Florida police department.

The man was skydiving on Oct. 3 in DeLand, about 40 miles north of Orlando, when his parachute failed, according to a tweet from the DeLand Police Department.

Officers were on scene at the DeLand Airport just before 12:30 p.m. Oct. 3.

A spokesperson told Fox35 Orlando the man had been skydiving with a company called Skydive DeLand when his parachute didn’t open.

A woman who answered the phone at Skydive DeLand hung up when contacted by McClatchy News for a comment.

The name of the skydiver has not yet been released.

In 2021, there were 10 skydiving fatalities, according to the United States Parachute Association. Eleven people died while skydiving in 2020.
