52-year-old inmate serving life without parole dies in Donaldson Correctional Facility infirmary

A 52-year-old state inmate died Friday in William Donaldson Correctional Facility in western Jefferson County.

Harold Wayne Bailey was pronounced dead at 11:58 a.m. after he was found unresponsive by the nursing staff in the facility’s infirmary, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates.

Bailey was in the infirmary undergoing treatment for significant natural disease. An autopsy showed no sign of foul play.

Bailey was serving a sentence of life without parole for a 2008 capital murder conviction in Lawrence County. The charge against him was capital because the victim was killed during a burglary.

So far this year, 32 inmates have died at Donaldson, surpassing the 2021 tally of 26 for the entire year.

According to the Alabama Department of Corrections, deaths at Donaldson have trended upward in recent years. ADOC said 17 inmates died in 2019, and 22 in 2020.

The agency has declined all requests for interviews about the increase in deaths.
