‘You’re the sucker, you’re the loser,’ Biden tells Trump at first 2024 debate

President Biden called Donald Trump a “sucker” and a “loser” — the same language the former president was said to have used to describe American soldiers who died during wars — after Trump attacked Biden’s record on veterans issues during Thursday night’s debate.

Trump brought up veterans issues while talking about immigration, claiming Biden cares more about undocumented immigrants than veterans.

“They’re living in luxury hotels in New York City and other places,” Trump said of undocumented immigrants. “Our veterans are on the streets, they’re dying because he doesn’t care about our veterans. He doesn’t care, he doesn’t like our veterans at all. There’s nobody’s been worse.”

Biden said Trump was lying about his record, pointing out that his administration expanded access to health insurance for 1 million veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange or burn pits.

The president then referenced his son, Beau Biden, who served seven months in Iraq and died of brain cancer that Joe Biden believed was linked to burn pits.

“My son spent a year in Iraq living next to one of those burn pits, came back with stage 4 glioblastoma,” he said.

Biden mentioned that he spoke to the commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of D-Day and visited Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France, where 2,200 Americans who died fighting in World War I are buried.

The president, citing former Trump chief of staff Gen. John Kelly, said Trump declined to visit the cemetery.

“He was standing with his four-star general and he told him, he said, ‘I don’t want to go in there because they’re a bunch of losers and suckers,” Biden said.

“My son was not a loser, he was not a sucker,” the president continued. “You’re the sucker, you’re the loser.”

Although Kelly confirmed Trump said the soldiers buried at Aisne-Marne were “suckers,” the former president disputed saying the remark.

“First of all, that was a made-up quote. ‘Suckers and losers,’ they made it up in a third-rate magazine,” Trump said.

“Who would say I’m at a cemetery or I’m talking about our veterans because nobody is taking better care .. of our soldiers than I have,” he said.

“To think that I would confer with generals and others saying ’suckers and losers’ … it was made up … just like ‘Russia, Russia, Russia’ was made up,” Trump said.
