When it comes to shark attacks, no state in the U.S. comes close to Florida.

According to the International Shark Attack File from the Florida Museum, the Sunshine State has seen 912 shark attacks since 1837. Coming in a distance second – 187 – was Hawaii, followed by California at 115.

What you may be surprised to learn Alabama’s spot in in the list of states reporting the greatest number of shark attacks. Alabama has reported 10 shark attacks since 1837, putting it at number 11.

It makes sense Florida is the country’s shark hub. According to Insider, the state has 1,350 miles of coastline – you can compare that to 60 in Alabama – that is home to 15 different shark species at 180 beaches. In general, shark attacks in Florida rise between May and October – coinciding with busy tourist season which brings more people to the beach – with a peak in August.

Between 2012 and 2021, sharks bit 471 people in the U.S. with eight fatalities.
