You can vote for this Alabama small town as best in South

Alabama already has the nation’s best city to live in. Now you can vote to make another town the best in the South.

Alexander City has been nominated as Best Small Southern Town by USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice 2023 and winners are determined by an online vote. Alexander City is the only Alabama city among the 20 nominees – which include towns and cities from Texas to Florida to Virginia.

In voting so far, Alexander City is in second place for Best Small Southern Town, trailing Maysville, Ky.

Alexander City, located about 50 miles north of Montgomery, is the hub of the Lake Martin area in east-central Alabama and adjacent to Wind Creek State Park, one of the most popular in the Alabama parks. It has a population of 14,843, according to the U.S. Census, and is located in Tallapoosa County.

Huntsville was named the nation’s “Best Place to Live” last year by U.S. News & World Report.

The survey’s description of Alexander City: “Just north of the sprawling Lake Martin reservoir, Alexander City is a quiet Southern town with plenty of shoreline for a lakeside getaway with family or friends. Swimming, fishing and boating are favorite local pastimes, and local Chimney Rock has become a hot spot for cliff jumping. Main Street also draws in locals and tourists, with boutique shops, restaurants, a summertime farmer’s market, and the Wellborn Muscle Car Museum, home to the nation’s largest high-performance Dodge collection.”

Rounding out the top 10 is West Monroe, La., at No. 3, followed by Abingdon, Va., and Pauls Valley, Okla. At Nos. 6-10 are Bryson City, N.C., Eureka Springs, Ark., Marfa, Texas, St. Augustine, Fla., and Beaufort, S.C.
