Yo-Yo Ma to appear with Mobile Symphony Orchestra in 2024
Famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma will perform again with the Mobile Symphony Orchestra as part of its newly announced 2023-24 season.
“I am thrilled to announce our exciting new season,” MSO Music Director Scott Speck said in a Wednesday announcement. “Of course, the biggest news is the return of Yo-Yo Ma – for his third visit to the MSO! There’s a reason why Yo-Yo Ma is a household name. He is one of the greatest artistic spirits of our generation. Yo-Yo Ma playing the Elgar Cello Concerto with the MSO will be the Gulf Coast’s most important musical event of the season.”
That event will take place Feb. 29. The rest of the season:
Sept. 16 and 17: “Heroes & Villains,” featuring music from the scores of “Star Wars,” “King Kong,” “Wonder Woman,” “The Incredibles” and more.
Nov. 18 and 19: A casual “Beethoven and Blue Jeans,” concert featuring young flutist Anthony Trionfo and Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony.
Dec. 16 and 17: The MSO’s annual holiday concert will feature guest conductor Robert J. Seebacher, vocalist Kevin Thompson and Mobile’s Singing Children.
Jan. 20 and 21: The MSO presents Stravinsky’s magical “Firebird Suite,” Duke Ellington’s jazz-infused “River Suite” and pianist Maxim Lando performing Tchaikovsky’s “Piano Concerto No. 1.”
March 9 and 10: Simone Porter will perform Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto.”
April 6 and 7: The University of South Alabama Concert Choir joins the orchestra for Mozart’s “Requiem.”
May 18 and 19: “A Latin Rhapsody,” featuring Cuban piano phenomenon Aldo Lopez-Gavilán performing Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” and Bernstein’s “West Side Story.”
Most concerts are performed twice in the Mobile Saenger Theatre: Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. The Yo-Yo Ma appearance is an exception, a one-time-only show at 7:30 p.m. on a Thursday. Single-show tickets for that event are on sale now to members and will be available to nonmembers Sept. 5. Prices range from $65 to $249.
Six-concert season memberships are $105-$432. Tickets to individual performances, including the holiday concert, will go on sale Aug. 1 for $20-$96.
