A new list from Yelp ranks the top 25 places to dine in Birmingham, and an Italian restaurant on U.S. 280 marks the top spot.

Capella Pizzeria in Inverness Village Center is the number one contender. The restaurant, which opened last December, is located near Starbucks and Fresh Market. Capella specializes in custom-made, wood-fired pizza. As of Oct. 25, the pizzeria has 111 reviews and an overall rating of 4.5 stars.

One word that kept coming up in the reviews: ”Authentic.”

Kimi W of Birmingham gave Capella four out of five stars:

“It’s always an inspiring sight to walk into a restaurant and see giant authentic pizza ovens firing away! That in addition to a line of cooks hard at work to get the pizzas ready. I was in anticipation to say the least!My pizza was wonderful. The crust was probably my favorite part. It was perfectly chewy with a crisp crust – everything I could ask for in a pizza. I ordered the Palermo. The cheese was stretchy, the sausage delicious, and the peppers sweet and pickley! I only wish there was some kind of fresh element like maybe a garnish of herbs on the pizza. I sort of feel like it needed it. Nevertheless, I am excited to come back and try a different kind of pizza.”

Paul C of Hoover gave the restaurant five stars:

“This restaurant is the most authentic Italian pizzeria experience in town. They make Napoletana style pizzas and their attention to detail is outstanding. The signature of a Naples-style is the chewy dough, sweet tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese.I had the Palermo, and it was amazing. Sausage, sweet red peppers, caramelized onions, San Mariano tomato sauce and mozzarella. The pie had a thin bottom and puffy bordering crust; the outside had a little char from the oven. The toppings are perfectly portioned. They were fresh and tasty, and they complemented the remarkable crust.I also tried the cannolis and they were as good as Mike’s Pastry’s at the North End in Boston.I was blown away. This place is the real deal, and may be the BEST pizza in Birmingham.”

To compile the Top 25 list, Yelp identified businesses in relevant categories on Yelp, then ranked the spots using a number of factors including the total volume and ratings of reviews between Summer 2022 and Summer 2023.

Other restaurants on the list include Gianmarco’s Restaurant (#2), Yo’ Mama’s (#3), Saigon Noodle House (#17), and Umami Bham (#25).
