Yankees pitcher goes from Slocomb to MLB All-Star Game

New York Yankees reliever Clay Holmes has been chosen for the American League pitching staff for the 94th annual MLB All-Star Game.

The pitchers and reserves for the game were announced on Sunday.

The all-star selection is the second for Holmes, who faced three batters in the eighth inning of the American League’s 3-2 victory over the National League in the 2022 MLB All-Star Game.

In 37 relief appearances this season, Holmes has a 1-3 record with a 3.00 earned-run average and 19 saves. In 36 innings, he has struck out 37.

In his final two seasons at Slocomb High School, Holmes struck out 210 in 144.3 innings. He had planned to play at Auburn. But after drafting Holmes in the ninth round in 2011, the Pittsburgh Pirates were determined to sign him. Pittsburgh needed a$1.2 million signing bonusto keep Holmes from joining the Tigers. Before Pittsburgh’s deal with Holmes, thebiggest signing bonus for a ninth-round pick had been $750,000.

Holmes reached the Major Leagues in 2018. When the Pirates traded Holmes to the Yankees in exchange for two minor-leaguers, the 6-foot-5 right-hander had a 5-7 record with a 5.57 ERA and no saves in 91 MLB appearances.

Since joining New York, Holmes has a 17-13 record with a 2.60 ERA and 63 saves in 190 games.

Holmes became the second former Alabama high school standout on the American League roster. Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson from Morgan Academy in Selma was voted into the starting lineup by fans.

The pitchers and reserves – a total of 23 players for each team – were chosen via player voting and the Commissioner’s Office.

The MLB All-Star Game is set for 7 p.m. CDT July 16 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. FOX will televise the game.
