XFL Week 8 roundup: D.C., Houston clinch playoff spots
The D.C. Defenders stopped a 2-point conversion attempt with 31 seconds to play to defeat the Seattle Sea Dragons 34-33 on Sunday night and secure a spot in the XFL playoffs.
The game capped the XFL’s Week 8 schedule. In the other Week 8 games:
· Even though quarterback AJ McCarron missed the game with a shoulder injury, the St. Louis Battlehawks beat the Vegas Vipers 21-17 on Saturday in the first overtime game of the season. In the best-of-three 2-point attempts, St. Louis converted on its first two while stopping Vegas twice. Battlehawks backup QB Nick Tiano and punter Sterling Hofrichter threw touchdown passes, with Hofrichter’s going for 64 yards with 4:55 left in the fourth quarter.
· In a game that featured eight turnovers, including a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown by Arlington, the Renegades defeated the Orlando Guardians 18-16 on Saturday. After a touchdown with 3:54 to play, Orlando ran in a 1-point conversion instead of attempting a 3-point play to tie. The Guardians then lost a fumble on their final possession.
· Only one of the six overtime plays reached the end zone, and because Houston scored it, the Roughnecks defeated the San Antonio Brahmas 17-15 on Sunday. The Brahmas lost after scoring nine points in the final 67 seconds to send the game into overtime. Houston also secured a spot in the playoffs.
D.C. quarterback Jordan Ta’amu completed 17-of-26 passes for 247 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions, and Seattle quarterback Ben DiNucci completed 28-of-42 passes for 301 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. As the teams combined for 30 points in the fourth quarter, each quarterback threw two TD passes, and DiNucci had a 3-point conversion in the final period.
Led by former Alabama State wide receiver and head coach Reggie Barlow, the Defenders lifted their record to a league-best 7-1 with two games remaining in the regular season. At 6-2, the Battlehawks remaining in the running for the North Division title. But by stopping the Sea Dragons’ five-game winning streak and dropping Seattle to 5-3 in completing a sweep of the teams’ two-game season series, D.C. clinched one of the division’s two postseason positions.
