XFL Week 4: Brandon Silvers still golden for Roughnecks

XFL Week 4: Brandon Silvers still golden for Roughnecks

Brandon Silvers threw three more touchdown passes in a 44-16 victory over the Orlando Guardians on Saturday as the Houston Roughnecks ran their XFL record to 4-0.

In the other games in the XFL’s fourth week of play:

· Seattle kept the San Antonio Brahmas in their end of the field after halftime for all but two snaps, and the second-half shutout allowed the Sea Dragons to edge away to a 15-6 victory on Saturday night.

· The St. Louis Battlehawks opened their home schedule before an XFL-record crowd of 38,310 at the Dome at America’s Center and defeated the Arlington Renegades 24-11 on Sunday.

· Under the direction of former Alabama State wide receiver and coach Reggie Barlow, the D.C. Defenders improved to 4-0 by defeating the Vegas Vipers 32-18 on Sunday night.

A former Gulf Shores High School and Troy quarterback, Silvers leads the league with 10 touchdown passes after completing 24-of-30 for 239 yards with three TDs and no interceptions against Orlando.

In the first half, Silvers completed 17-of-21 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns as the Roughnecks built a 26-10 lead.

Silvers capped Houston’s opening possession with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Travell Harris, and he connected with Jontre Kirklin on a 42-yard touchdown pass with 61 seconds left in the second quarter as the Roughnecks took a 26-10 halftime lead.

“Just coming out, we knew we were going to pass it a lot on them,” Silvers said. “We wanted to see if we could go the first half with no runs, and we ended up running one time. …

“We have a lot of speed. We have a lot of guys that can go on the receivers – all eight of them – so we were getting them in and out, getting them the ball and see what they could do. This is a league to show what you can do, and every one of those guys deserve catching the ball and scoring touchdowns.”

Among Silvers’ nine second-half passes was a 59-yard touchdown toss to Harris with 10:57 remaining.

“The quarterback had a great game,” Houston coach Wade Phillips said, “and we have so much speed on offense, it’s scary, so I’m glad to have that. And this guy running it is doing a great job.”
