XFL Week 2 roundup: Brandon Silvers shines for Houston

A week after tossing two touchdown passes in Houston’s XFL opener, quarterback Brandon Silvers threw for two more TDs in the Roughnecks’ 23-14 victory over the Arlington Renegades on Sunday night to cap Week 2 of the season.

The former Gulf Shores High School and Troy standout had a 5-yard touchdown pass to running back Nick Holley followed by a 2-point conversion throw to wide receiver Jontre Kirklin as Houston took an 11-0 lead in the first quarter.

Silvers had a 15-yard touchdown pass to Cedric Byrd to give the Roughnecks a 17-14 lead in the third quarter.

In the XFL’s other Week 2 games:

· Donny Hageman kicked a 44-yard field goal on the game’s final snap to lift the St. Louis Battlehawks to a 20-18 victory over the Seattle Sea Dragons on Thursday night. After former Gadsden City High School standout Jordan Veasy caught a touchdown pass to give Seattle a one-point lead with 1:12 to play, St. Louis moved 50 yards to get in position for the game-winning kick.

· D.C. ran the football on its final 21 offensive snaps (except for a 2-point conversion pass) as the Defenders scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to rally past the Vegas Vipers 18-6 in the rain on Saturday night. Four players combined to run for 229 yards for D.C.

· Quarterback Jack Coan threw three touchdown passes in the San Antonio Brahmas’ 30-12 victory over the Orlando Guardians on Sunday afternoon.

During Week 2 of the XFL season, 23 players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field:

St. Louis Battlehawks 20, Seattle Sea Dragons 18

· Sea Dragons long snapper Thomas Fletcher (Alabama) handled the snaps for three punts and one field goal.

· AJ McCarron (St. Paul’s Episcopal, Alabama) started at quarterback for the Battlehawks. McCarron completed 22-of-36 passes for 184 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and ran for 41 yards and one touchdown on five carries. He also completed a 2-point conversion pass. McCarron scored on a 1-yard run with 7:30 left in the first half as St. Louis started its comeback from a 12-0 deficit. McCarron completed a 44-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Hakeem Butler with 7:14 to play as the Battlehawks took a 17-12 lead. In the fourth quarter, McCarron completed 8-of-12 passes for 100 yards with one interception and ran twice for 23 yards.

· Sea Dragons wide receiver Kelvin McKnight (Samford) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Chris Owens (Alabama) started at guard for the Sea Dragons.

· Jordan Veasy (Gadsden City) started at wide receiver for the Sea Dragons. Veasy caught an 8-yard touchdown pass as Seattle took an 18-17 lead with 1:21 to play.

· Kareem Walker (South Alabama) started at running back for the Battlehawks. Walker ran for 27 yards on seven carries and caught two passes for 13 yards.

· Battlehawks offensive lineman Dallas Warmack (Alabama) played but did not record any stats.

· Sea Dragons wide receiver Damion Willis (Troy) caught two passes for 13 yards.

D.C. Defenders 18, Vegas Vipers 6

· Defenders long snapper/tight end Trae Barry (Spanish Fort, Jacksonville State) handled the snaps for three punts and one field goal.

· Defenders linebacker Jamal Brooks (Bessemer City, South Alabama) made two tackles and recovered one fumble. Brooks recovered a fumble by Vegas quarterback Brett Hundley as the Vipers 44-yard line with D.C. leading 10-6 in the fourth quarter. The Defenders scored a touchdown five snaps later.

· Quinterrius Eatmon (Vigor) started at right offensive tackle for the Vipers.

· Vipers offensive lineman Antonio Garcia (Troy) played but did not record any stats.

· Vipers defensive back Maurice Smith (Alabama) is on the reserve list and not eligible to play.

· Defenders nose tackle Gabe Wright (Auburn) made one tackle.

San Antonio Brahmas 30, Orlando Guardians 12

· Ja’Chai Baker (South Alabama) started at left offensive tackle for the Guardians.

· Guardians defensive lineman Nick Coe (Auburn) played but did not record any stats.

· Brahmas linebacker Ben Davis (Gordo, Alabama) played but did not record any stats.

· Guardians defensive back Javaris Davis (Auburn) is on the reserve list and not eligible to play.

· Trevon Sanders (Troy) started at nose guard for the Guardians.

· Guardians defensive back Maurice Smitherman (Minor) is on the reserve list and not eligible to play.

· Guardians linebacker Erroll Thompson (Florence) recorded one tackle for loss.

· Guardians defensive back Dee Virgin (West Alabama) is on the reserve list and not eligible to play.

Houston Roughnecks 23, Arlington Renegades 14

· T.J. Barnes (Enterprise) started at defensive end for the Renegades. Barnes made one tackle.

· Sal Cannella (Auburn) started at tight end for the Renegades. Cannella caught four passes for 38 yards. Cannella also recovered a fumbled punt at the Houston 23-yard line to set up an Arlington touchdown in the second quarter.

· Mike Horton (Auburn) started at right guard for the Renegades. Horton left the game with an injury late in the first half.

· Davonte Lambert (Auburn) started at defensive end for the Renegades.

· Brandon Silvers (Gulf Shores, Troy) started at quarterback for the Roughnecks. Silvers completed 14-of-28 passes for 173 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

· Roughnecks center John Yarbrough (Homewood) played but did not record any stats.

In Week 3 of the XFL season, the Sea Dragons visit the Vipers at 6 p.m. CST Saturday. FX will televise the game. On Sunday, the Battlehawks visit the Defenders at noon for a matchup of 2-0 teams, the Guardians visit the Renegades at 3 p.m. and the Brahmas visit the Roughnecks at 7 p.m. FX will televise the first two games on Sunday, and ESPN2 will televise the nightcap.
