Wrongful death suit filed in Mother’s Day strip club shooting against Prichard, owners

The mother of a man shot and killed at a Prichard adult nightclub in mid-May has filed a wrongful death suit against the club, the building owners and the City of Prichard.

Jacquell Graham died May 14, hours after he was shot inside the Lotus Gentlemen’s Club on Wilson Avenue. Two other people were injured in the shooting.

One suspect, Harold Lee Miller, has been charged with Graham’s murder, along with two counts of 1st degree assault. Two other suspects — Raheem Catlin and Deangelo Miller — remain at large.

In her lawsuit, Mary Blevins claims her son’s death was due to the failure of the City of Prichard, the building’s owners, identified in the filing as Raymond Zoghby and Roselie Zoghby, and club manager Eddrick Williams to curb a trend of violence at the club.

The suit notes a shootout at the club on Easter Sunday last year, resulting in two men fatally shooting each other, and also states Graham himself had been shot at the club a week prior to his murder.

“This is a tragedy that could have been—and should have been—prevented,” said Blevins’ attorney, Joseph Cannizo Jr.

“As we allege in the lawsuit, the defendants shirked their legal obligations, allowing a dangerous nightclub that’s no stranger to violence and illegal activity to stay in business. As a result, a mother lost her son on Mother’s Day in a senseless act of violence.”

The lawsuit also alleges the Lotus Gentlemen’s Club “harbors its fair share of criminals” and claims the club’s security guards/bouncers were accepting bribes in the form of cocaine to allow patrons into the club with firearms. The bouncers are listed as “fictitious defendants 1-10″ in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit, which requests a trial by jury, seeks both compensatory and punitive damages.

Neither the City of Prichard nor the club owner(s) have responded to the lawsuit.
