Wrightsell not present for Alabama open practice before Sweet 16

Alabama men’s basketball guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr. was not present Wednesday during the portion of practice reporters were allowed to watch ahead of the Crimson Tide’s Sweet 16 appearance. Wrightsell exited UA’s round of 32 win over Grand Canyon with a head injury.

Media members were allowed to observe the first 15 minutes of Alabama’s practice at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Wrightsell was not seen on the court or on the sidelines.

Head coach Nate Oats will speak at a press conference after practice concludes.

“Latrell Wrightsell’s got a head injury, so he couldn’t play in the second half.” Oats said after the Grand Canyon game, noting that he expected the guard back for the Sweet 16.

Wrightsell missed time with a concussion earlier this season. He transferred to Alabama from Cal State Fullerton before this season.

After the win in the second round, Alabama players said Wrightsell’s injury rallied the team.

“Just made sure we had to get through,” Rylan Griffen said. “For me, personally, I know he wants to play. I know he didn’t want to get hurt today. He went out there and gave everything for us for the time he did play. So I was just like, ‘Let’s make sure we make sure Trelly has a chance to play again for us this season.’”

The Crimson Tide beat Grand Canyon and will face North Carolina in the Sweet 16. Should UA beat the top-seeded Tar Heels, it will move on to face the winner of Clemson and Arizona’s Thursday matchup in the Elite Eight.
