Wounded suspect charged in shootout that injured Montgomery police officer, robbery victim

A Montgomery man has been charged following a weekend shootout with police that left him and an officer injured.

Devonta Lamarcus Fuller, 23, is charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of first-degree robbery. Fuller earlier this year pleaded guilty to a felony and received a suspended sentence.

The incident began shortly before 12:30 a.m. Saturday when Montgomery police were dispatched to the intersection of South Panama Street and Poplar Street on a report of a person with a gun who had fired shots.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and charging documents, as an officer arrived at the intersection, Fuller began shooting. Simultaneously, more officers arrived at the scene.

A shootout ensued.

During the ordeal, records state, Fuller pointed his gun at a man who was in a vehicle and ordered him to get out. The man did so and started running away and was reportedly shot in the leg by Fuller.

Fuller tried to leave in the man’s vehicle but was unsuccessful. He then fled to a business on Ann Street where he barricaded himself inside.

Fuller was eventually taken into custody. He was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released.

Following his release, Fuller was booked into the Montgomery County Detention Center at 6:21 p.m. Saturday where he remains held.

The bystander/robbery victim was hospitalized for gunshot wound.

Officer Jonathan Cooper was shot in his left bicep. He also was taken to the hospital. An update on his condition has not yet been released.

ALEA said the investigation is ongoing.

Court records show Fuller pleaded guilty in May to a felony charge of theft of property. He received a two-year suspended sentence.

The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office is seeking to revoke that probation following the weekend shootout.
