World Series presents Jalen Hurts with dilemma

The World Series presents a dilemma for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.

His hometown team, the Houston Astros, won the American League championship. But rooting for his favorite team to win the 2022 Major League Baseball crown might not be considered good form because the Astros are playing the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series.

During his Wednesday press conference, the former Alabama standout was asked how he was handling the matchup and his allegiances during the Fall Classic.

“I’m Houston born and raised,” Hurts said. “I love my city. That’s my hometown. But my home now is Philly, and I love this city, too. That’s how I deal with it. They’re going to go out there and play, and that’s what it’s going to be.”

On Dec. 10, 2020, at the press conference before his first start for the Eagles, Hurts committed what was considered a fashion faux pas by wearing an Astros cap while meeting the press. He said at the time he realized that was awkward and already had gotten his caps and jackets for the Phillies and the NBA’s 76ers to support the Philadelphia teams.

Hurts said in watching the Phillies go from wild-card qualifiers to National League champs, he’d seen a quality that he wants the Eagles to embody, too.

“I think it’s great for the city of Philadelphia, what the Phillies are doing,” Hurts said. “For whatever reason, nobody expected them to do this, and I think it shows the type of team that they are, how they’re coached and the mentality that they have. We preach it all the time and you see it on display when you see them play, how they play together, truly making plays for one another.”

The best-of-seven World Series starts at 7 p.m. CDT Friday at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The World Series arrives in Philadelphia on Monday night for Game 3.

The Eagles play at home on Sunday, when they return to action against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Philadelphia won its first six games to stand as the NFL’s only unbeaten team before having an open date in Week 7.
