Wooden Award retroactively adds Alabama’s Brandon Miller to player of the year ballot

The Wooden Award, one of the major national player of the year honors in college basketball, has retroactively added Alabama forward Brandon Miller to its ballot.

Miller was part of Wooden late-season watch list in January but was not among its final 15 candidates announced March 4. That came less than three weeks after Miller’s name surfaced during a court hearing for former teammate Darius Miles’ capital murder charge, although Miller was not charged and is considered a witness.

The Wooden Award had amended its March 4 press release by Saturday, and it now includes 16 candidates with Miller’s name among them. Voting will take place March 13-20, with finalists announced March 29 and the winner announced April 7.

The Wooden Award’s organizer, the Los Angeles Athletic Club, did not immediately respond to an AL.com request for comment about the change. The organization did not make any announcement about Miller’s status.

The award’s website lists the following criteria in selecting its candidates: “All balloted players have been certified by their university to meet or exceed the qualifications for the Wooden Award as set forth by Coach Wooden when the Award was established. The qualifications include: candidates must exhibit strength of character, both on and off the court; candidates must be full-time students in an accredited NCAA college or university; candidates must be making progress toward graduation and have a cumulative 2.00 grade point average since enrolling in their school; candidates must contribute to team effort; candidates must excel in both offense and defense; and candidates should be considered on their performance over the course of the entire season.”

On Friday, Miller was among the final 10 semifinalists announced for the Naismith Award, another major national player of the year honor given by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Miller is also among the final 15 candidates for the Oscar Robertson Trophy for player of the year given by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, and made the final five for the Julius Erving Award as the best small forward given by the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Miller was named the SEC’s player of the year this week by both the league’s coaches and the Associated Press.
