Wommack: Alabama’s DaShawn Jones should make ‘Full recovery’ before USF game
Alabama football cornerback DaShawn Jones was limited in Saturday’s blowout win over Western Kentucky. According to the ESPN broadcast of the game, the Wake Forest transfer was dealing with a hamstring issue.
Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kane Wommack confirmed the injury situation on Monday after the game. He said it’s not expected to hamper Jones in the future.
“Day Day was battling a little bit this week with a little ding and so we wanted to be cautious with him,” Wommack said. “But we felt like there was enough there that he felt good enough on game day that he could go. He had not gotten as many practice reps during the week of preparation, and so we expect him to make a full recovery this week.”
Jones played 12 snaps throughout Saturday’s game. He made one tackle for loss in the 63-0 Alabama victory.
He transferred in from Wake Forest this offseason. The redshirt junior is expected to provide valuable experience in a defensive backfield that skews young, after experiencing a mass exodus to both the NFL Draft and transfer portal following the 2023 season and Nick Saban’s retirement.
Freshman Zabien Brown started opposite Domani Jackson for the Crimson Tide. On Monday, Wommack praised all of the Tide’s youngsters in the defensive backfield.
“Zabien probably, from the start of spring ball all the way through fall camp, I thought was the most consistent,” Wommack said. “In terms of fixing issues as they came, consistent in his fundamentals, his approach, every single day, and I thought he was well-deserving to be able to go out there as one of the first 11 to represent our defense. Very proud of the work he’s put in.”
Alabama returns to action on Saturday against South Florida. The game is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. CT at Bryant-Denny Stadium, and will be aired on ESPN.
