An investigation is underway after a woman’s body was found in southwest Birmingham Sunday evening.

A passerby made the discovery at 5:22 p.m. on 17th Street S.W. between Laurel Avenue and Cedar Avenue.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced the woman dead on the scene. She has not yet been identified but was a white female.

Birmingham police Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said the death remains unclassified pending an autopsy by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
