Woman shot to death on west Birmingham sidewalk; man detained for questioning

A woman was found shot to death on the sidewalk of a Birmingham neighborhood late Friday night.

West Precinct officers were dispatched at 11:43 p.m. to the 600 block of 11th Court West on a report of a person shot. That location is off Arkadelphia Road.

When officers got on the scene, said Sgt. LaQuitta Wade, they found the woman unresponsive on the sidewalk in front of a house. Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced her dead.

Wade said it appears that an altercation took place between the woman and a man.  “Moments later,’’ she said, “people in the area heard a shot being fired and called 911.”

Wade said the deadly shooting could be domestic in nature. A man was taken into custody and was undergoing questioning by detectives at police headquarters.

“If you saw anything or heard anything, please give us call,’’ she said.

The victim is the city’s 65th homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and five others have been ruled justifiable and therefore are not deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County there have been 97 homicides including the 66 in Birmingham.
