Woman shoots and kills man in south Alabama, claims self-defense

A woman shot and killed a man in south Alabama Tuesday night but says it was self-defense.

According to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, Velma Edwards-Nix has been charged with murdering Andre Griffin.

The agency said deputies responded to a shooting at the 1400 block of Mort Road in Wilmer at about 10:51 p.m.

Officers found Griffin dead inside the home with a gunshot to his head and both his hands in cast.

According to the sheriff’s office, Nix told authorities that she shot Griffin after he tried to choke her.

After the shooting Nix ran to a neighbor’s house and called 911.

Griffin and Nix lived together, the sheriff’s office said.
