Woman jailed after 42-year-old man shot dead in abandoned Birmingham home

Authorities have released the name of a man fatally shot inside an abandoned Ensley house Wednesday morning.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office Thursday identified the victim as Brandon Luvine Cunningham. He was 42 and lived in Birmingham.

West Precinct officers were dispatched shortly after 10:30 a.m. to a call of a person inside the house in the 3200 block of Avenue S.

Police entered the house and found the victim unresponsive. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced Cunningham dead on the scene at 10:46 a.m.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said investigators determined Cunningham and the suspect were inside the abandoned house when a physical altercation erupted.

A woman was taken into custody several houses away. She remains held in the Birmingham City Jail as the investigation continues.

Cunningham is the city’s 21st homicide in 2025. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 34 homicides, including the 21 in Birmingham.
