Woman in headlock pulled into Auburn alley in rape attempt, police say: Suspect captured after chase
A 29-year-old man is under arrest after police say he put a woman in a headlock, dragged her into an Auburn alley and tried to rape her.
Rusbi Arael Chilel-Perez, of Opelika, is charged with first-degree kidnapping and first-degree attempted rape, Auburn police announced Wednesday.
The attack happened in the early morning hours of Saturday, Aug. 12, in the area of North College Street and West Magnolia Avenue, said Assistant Police Chief Clarence Stewart.
The victim said Chilel-Perez, whom she did not know, began trying to interact with her while she was in the downtown area. The suspect eventually took physical control of the victim and abducted her to a secluded area close by.
Charging documents state Chilel-Perez put the victim in a headlock and pulled her into an alley where he began to try to take off her clothes. Police said he attempted to engage in sexual intercourse.
The victim resisted and was able to escape. She found Auburn police officers who were conducting foot patrol in the downtown area.
Chilel-Perez was developed as a suspect, and he was located driving a vehicle in the downtown area. Officers directed him to stop before he fled in the vehicle at a high rate of speed, Stewart said.
Chilel-Perez crashed his vehicle into light poles at multiple intersections causing the vehicle to become disabled at the intersection of North Dean Road and Opelika Road.
He then fled on foot, and he was taken into custody near the 1000 block of Opelika Road.
Chilel-Perez was also charged with driving under the influence, public intoxication and attempting to elude.
He is being held without bond in the Lee County Jail.
