Woman hurt from broken glass after shots fired into Jefferson County Family Court

A woman was hurt when gunfire shattered the windows of the Jefferson County Family Court building Thursday morning in Birmingham, authorities said.

Officers from the Birmingham Police Department’s North Precinct were dispatched to the building around 9:10 a.m. Thursday on a report of shots fired, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

Officers found the front door of the court building was damaged by gunfire and several windows were shattered from the shots.

A woman inside the building was wounded by shattered glass, Fitzgerald said.

She sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The preliminary investigation suggested an unknown suspect or suspects fired shots at someone, possibly from the courthouse parking lot.

Police believe the gunfire was an isolated incident and is not believed to be connected to any courthouse official or matters being considered in the court.

No suspects were in custody as of 11:40 a.m. Thursday.

Anyone with information on the incident was asked to call the department’s felony assault unit at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.

Crime Stoppers tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward up to $5,000.
