Woman found nude, fatally shot outside Avondale apartment now ID’d; suspect charged
A woman found nude and fatally shot outside an Avondale apartment has now been identified, and a suspect has been charged in her death.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Dianisleidy Rodriquez-Hernandez. She was 34 and from Cuba.
South Precinct officers about 4:40 p.m. Wednesday were notified of shots fired and then a person shot in the 4200 block of Fifth Avenue South. That location is directly across the street from Avondale Park.
Police found Rodriquez-Hernandez unresponsive just outside a unit. She was pronounced dead on the scene at 5:10 p.m.
Johnny Ray Sears Jr., 44, of Birmingham, is charged with murder in the woman’s death, according to court and jail records. Charging documents list his address as the apartment building where the killing happened.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin on Friday said the two “were together to conduct an illegal transaction.” He did not elaborate.
Ray was taken into custody at the scene and held at the Birmingham City Jail pending formal charges. The murder warrant was issued Friday morning.
Ray was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at noon Friday and is being held without bond.
