Woman found dead on Birmingham road was shot; homicide probe underway

A woman found dead on a north Birmingham dead-end street was the victim of homicide.

The discovery was made at 8:21 a.m. Thursday in the 1300 block of 18th Street North.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said a city worker found the woman unresponsive. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced her dead on the scene.

Detectives did not initially see any obvious signs of foul play. However, the body was taken to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office where an autopsy showed she had been shot.

The woman’s name has not yet been released. Fitzgerald said the woman was an adult Black female with braids. She appeared to be age 25 to 30.

She is Birmingham’s sixth homicide this year, and the first in 11 days. In all of Jefferson County, there have been eight homicides including the six in Birmingham.
