An investigation is underway after a woman was found dead in a Birmingham alley.

A utility worker made the discovery at 11:58 a.m. Monday in the 1500 block of Alabama Avenue S.W., according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. The woman was in the grass on the shoulder of the alley.

She was pronounced dead on the scene at 12:19 p.m.

Authorities have not identified the woman. She was an adult Black female.

Medical examiners will perform an autopsy today to determine the cause and manner of death.

Birmingham police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
