Woman dies after vehicle rear-ends box trailer on I-65 in Mobile, police say

A 33-year-old woman died after the vehicle she was driving rear-ended a box trailer attached to a semi-trailer early Wednesday morning on I-65 in Mobile, authorities said.

Mobile police officers responded to the accident around 7:20 a.m. Wednesday in the southbound lanes of I-65 between Dauphin Street and Airport Boulevard, said Cpl. Katrina Frazier.

The preliminary investigation into the wreck revealed traffic was “experiencing significant slowdowns and coming to a halt due to an earlier collision,” Frazier said.

While traffic was slowed, a semi-trailer truck pulling a box trailer was stationary in the center lane of I-65 southbound.

A vehicle being driven by Elizabeth Carvalho De Souza, 33, collided with the rear of the box trailer attached to the semi-trailer.

Carvalho De Souza was taken to a local hospital where she died of her injuries, said Frazier.

The accident remained under investigation Wednesday night.
