Woman dies after falling over Virgin Voyages cruise ship balcony onto another passenger
A vacation on the high seas took a turn for the tragic after a woman fell to her death from a balcony aboard a Virgin Voyages cruise ship, the company said.
The unnamed passenger tumbled over the balcony barrier and fell onto another person on a deck some 10 stories below, a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement to PEOPLE. The incident unfolded on Sunday around 6 p.m., shortly after the Virgin Voyages ship, Valiant Lady, departed a Miami port for Roatán, Honduras.
“This passenger went over their balcony onto a lower deck, and despite receiving immediate medical attention, has passed away,” Virgin Voyages said.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss of life and our hearts and thoughts are with this person’s loved ones.”
The person she fell on was not seriously injured, TMZ reported.
The cruise line also confirmed its ship was “immediately redirected back to Miami” after the incident. The company added that it’s working closely with local officials as they kick off an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the passenger’s death.
The ship has since set sail again, albeit with a different itinerary. It’s now slated to dock in Costa Maya on Wednesday rather than Cozumel.
A Virgin Voyages spokesperson told PEOPLE the change was triggered by the weather and does not have anything to do with the recent passenger death.
