Woman died from medical issue, not crash, at Barber Motorsports Park, coroner’s office says

A woman who died following an incident at Barber Motorsports Park died from a medical issue not a crash, authorities announced Tuesday.

Silke Maria Crombie, 56, of North Carolina, died at UAB Hospital Sunday, Oct. 15.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office initially said Crombie died following a crash during a side-car race on Saturday, Oct. 7.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Crombie actually suffered a medical event which led to her death, which is contrary to what first responders initially recounts to medical examiners.

Crombie, Yates said, “experienced a medical event while driving a motorcycle-sidecar and immediately became unresponsive.”

Crombie’s sidecar partner was able to get the motorcycle to come to a stop safely.

The park was hosting the 2023 Barber Vintage Festival over that weekend.

According to roadracingworld.com, Crombie was an American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association competitor racing during the final weekend of the 2023 AHRMA road racing championship at Barber Motorsports Park.

“Silke was known for her loving smile, her German wit, and her passion for everything, particularly racing motorcycles. Silke’s impact on our lives will forever be remembered,” said Daniel May, AHRMA’s Executive Director in the roadracingworld.com article. “As we mourn the loss of her physical presence, let us also celebrate the beautiful moments we shared and the positive influence she had on all of us.”
