Woman convicted of murdering 19-year-old man protecting pregnant friend in Mobile

A 38-year-old woman was found guilty of murder by a Mobile County jury which found she pistol-whipped a 19-year-old man before shooting him in the back in 2020.

Titiana Overton Shelton was found guilty of intentional murder Wednesday afternoon, according to the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office.

On May 10, 2020, Shelton was at John Seafood on Springhill Avenue in Mobile when she started a fight with a woman who was in her third trimester of pregnancy, according to prosecutors. The victim, Klintaveus Thompson, was a friend of the pregnant woman and attempted to intervene, pulling Shelton off the woman, but in the process both Thompson and Shelton fell through a glass window.

Shelton rose to her feet, produced a .40-caliber handgun from her purse, and pistol-whipped Thompson multiple times before firing a single, fatal shot into his back.

Shelton fled the scene but was apprehended by Mobile police the following day.

“Today’s conviction serves as a reminder that our community will not tolerate reckless behavior that jeopardizes the safety and well-being of others,” said Mobile District Attorney Keith Blackwood. “We remain steadfast in our dedication to pursuing justice and ensuring that those who commit such heinous acts are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

Shelton is scheduled to be sentenced May 2. She faces a sentence of 20 years to life in prison.
