Woman convicted of killing her on-again, off-again girlfriend at a Homewood apartment

A woman has been convicted in the 2023 shooting death of her on-again, off-again girlfriend at a Homewood apartment complex.

A Jefferson County jury on Thursday found Tayla Roxann Roland, 25, guilty of murder in the slaying of 25-year-old Kaziya Nykysha Page.

The trial began earlier this week before Jefferson County Circuit Judge Shanta Owens.

Page, of Birmingham, was found shot at 11:42 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2023, in the breezeway of an apartment complex in the 200 block of Robert Jemison Road.

Testimony showed that an argument between the two erupted that morning and Roland shot Page twice in the stomach.

Following the gunfire, Page ran from the apartment and jumped over the second-story railing, which was captured on a neighbor’s Ring doorbell camera and circulated on social media.

Page was able to call 911 after the shooting and her fall, but died less than three hours later at UAB Hospital.

After Page jumped over the railing, Roland gathered up her own belongings from the apartment and left.

Homewood police took Roland into custody shortly before 4:30 p.m. at a home on Circle Trail in Birmingham.

Roland claimed Page had threatened her with some type of sharp object but no object was ever found.

The jury rejected Roland’s claims of self-defense.

Roland was represented by the Jefferson County Public Defender’s Office.

Jefferson County Deputy District Attorney’s Elise Driskell, Olivia Dinning and Shawn Allen prosecuted the case.

Roland has been jailed since 2023. Sentencing is set for August.
