Woman charged with smuggling cell phones, earbuds, jewelry to brother in Alabama prison facility

A 29-year-old woman is under arrest after authorities say she tried to smuggle contraband to her brother at an Alabama Department of Corrections facility.

Shakethea Pearson, of Montgomery, is charged with promoting prison contraband. That is a felony crime.

According to ADOC officials, a correctional officer witnessed Shakethea Person throw two packages near the visitation building at Red Eagle Community Work Center. Her brother, 40-year-old Leviron Pearson, is serving a 25-year sentence for a first-degree robbery conviction out of Montgomery County.

According to court documents, the packages contained cell phones, necklaces, watches, and earbuds.

As she was taken into custody, authorities said, her brother confessed to being involved.

Leviron Pearson also is now charged with second-degree promoting prison contraband.

Shakethea was booked into the Montgomery County Detention Facility on Sunday and released the same day after posting $2,500 bond.

ADOC has made a series of contraband arrests in recent weeks as part of an ongoing crackdown.
