Woman charged with murder in fatal shooting of 65-year-old man at Bessemer home

A woman has been charged in the shooting death of a 65-year-old man in Bessemer.

Tracie Marks Jones, 62, is charged with murder in Wednesday slaying of Elijah Mack Jr.

Jones will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail where she will be held without bond, said Bessemer police Det. Justin Burmeister.

Officers were dispatched at 5:30 p.m. to a report of a person shot inside a home in the 800 block of 24th Street North.

Burmeister said police entered the home and found Mack wounded inside. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 5:47 p.m.

Jones was quickly taken in custody.

A motive has not yet been determined.

Mack is Bessemer’s first homicide for Bessemer in 2025. The city ended last year with 11 homicides.
