Woman, 19, charged in shooting that critically injured 4-year-old girl at Birmingham apartment
A 19-year-old woman has been charged in connection with the shooting a young girl in Birmingham’s Smithfield community last month.
Taniyah Lowery is charged with second-degree assault in the July 6 shooting of 4-year-old Kamoria Houston. Birmingham police said Lowery is a family member of the girl but did not specify the relationship.
Charging documents against Lowery state she recklessly caused physical injury to Kamoria with a pistol.
It was just before 2 p.m. that Thursday when officers with the Birmingham Police Department’s Community Safety Partnership Unit – assigned to Birmingham’s public housing communities – were in Smithfield when they were approached by a community member who told them there was an infant shot.
Officers went to the 800 block of First Street North to an apartment and found the 4-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
She was taken to Children’s of Alabama, where police said at the time she was “fighting for her life.” An update on her condition has not been released.
Police said the girl was in the apartment unit when at least one shot was fired, possibly more.
Authorities have not said whether the girl got hold of a gun and shot herself, or whether Lowery discharged the gun, and court records do not provide clarity on that issue either.
Lowery was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on July 25 at 7:23 p.m. and released at 8:59 p.m. after posting $10,000 bond.
