Witnesses, information sought in 2022 slaying of Birmingham high school student

A Woodlawn High School student was killed just over one year ago, and no one has been brought to justice in his death.

Ty’nez Durden, 17, was shot shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, 2022.

Birmingham’s East Precinct officers were dispatched to the 7700 Block of Sunrise Lane on report of a person shot.

When police arrived on the scene, they found Durden lying unresponsive in the parking lot of an apartment complex, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service rushed Durden to Children’s of Alabama. He died at the hospital three days later.

Authorities said Durden was standing outside the complex when a sedan pulled up and fired multiple shots at him.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Ty’nez Durden, a student at Woodlawn High School,’’ Superintendent Mark Sullivan said following the fatal shooting. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, as well as the entire Woodlawn High School family.”

Anyone with information is asked to call homicide investigators at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
