With back nine implosion, Justin Thomas misses cut at Masters

Justin Thomas stepped onto the 15th tee during the second round of the Masters at even par overall and safely within the cut line to make the weekend which, at that time, was +5.

What followed was an implosion.

Thomas double-bogeyed the 15th hole. He double-bogeyed the 16th hole. He bogeyed the 17th hole and double-bogeyed the 17th hole.

He was suddenly +7.

His rough closing stretch pushed the cut line to +6 — +6 wound up as the final cut line — which allowed playing partner and former Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama to make the cut.

But Thomas didn’t.

It’s a continuation of struggles for the former Alabama men’s golfer since he won the 2022 PGA Championship. Thomas has now missed the cut in four of his last five majors. His best finish since his PGA Championship win is T37 at the 2022 US Open.

No former Crimson Tide golfer made the cut.

Thomas, Nick Dunlap and Lee Hodges all finished at +7, one shot away from playing the weekend.

Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa and Bryson DeChambeau are tired for the lead heading into the weekend at the Masters, all at -6.

Only 14 golfers are under par after two rounds following a very windy Friday at Augusta National.

Former Jacksonville State golfer and 2016 Masters winner Danny Willett is one of those 14 at -1 overall. Birmingham resident Sepp Straka is also in for the weekend at even par overall.

Tee times have not yet been announced for Saturday as of 7 p.m. CT Friday.
