With Alabama guard out with head injury, freshman gets 1st start
Alabama starting guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr. will miss the Tide’s game against Florida with a head injury, a team spokesperson confirmed to AL.com.
Wrightsell was not a part of the team’s warmups in Coleman Coliseum as No. 13 UA readied for the No. 24 Gators. A transfer from Cal State Fullerton, he was coming off his best two-game stretch of the season, including 16 points in the second half in a blowout win last Saturday.
Freshman Jarin Stevenson will get the first start of his career as UA moves to a bigger lineup. Alabama’s other starters remained the same: Mark Sears, Aaron Estrada, Rylan Griffen and Grant Nelson.
UA will miss Wrightsell’s 9.0 points per game and 44.5% conversion rate from 3-point range, ranked fourth and second on the team, respectively. Reserve guard Davin Cosby (7.5 minutes per game) could factor into the rotation as could freshman Sam Walters.
Stevenson, a stretch forward Oats has compared to NBA draft pick Noah Clowney, has averaged 5.6 points and 2.6 rebounds across 16.6 minutes per game. He matched a career-high 14 points in UA’s win over Mississippi State on Feb. 3.
Alabama (18-7, 10-2 SEC) will look to extend its conference lead by knocking off Florida (18-7, 8-4).
