Winn-Dixie prescriptions moving to 2 major pharmacy chains after Aldi merger

Winn-Dixie pharmacy customers will have their prescriptions moved to two major retail chains ahead of a planned merger with German-based grocer Aldi.

Prescriptions managed by Winn-Dixie will be transferred to CVS and Walgreens in the coming months. There is no specific date for the transfer but Meredith Hurley, senior director of communications for Winn-Dixie parent company Southeastern Grocers, told the Orlando Sentinel customers will receive “sufficient advance notice.”

“We are working closely with CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens to ensure that our customers’ prescriptions are handled carefully and confidentially and that there won’t be any delay in service,” Hurley said.

Aldi announced earlier this month it was purchasing some 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores covering Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. Some of the stores will be converted to Aldi’s locations while others will continue to operate as Winn-Dixie and Harveys. The locations that will be changed have not been announced.

Aldi’s, however, does not operate pharmacies.

Aldi currently operates its 26th regional headquarters and distribution center in Loxley with plans to open 20 new Aldi-brand stores in the Southeast by the end of the year. According to its website, the firm currently operates 40 stores in Alabama.
