Will Wednesday be the hottest day of 2023?

Today could be the hottest day of 2023 for some places in Alabama.

The National Weather Service has covered the entire state in either excessive heat warnings or heat advisories for Wednesday.

Many areas could reach 100 degrees — or higher — this afternoon. Those air temperatures combined with humidity levels could make it feel even hotter, according to forecasters.

Many areas could hit 100 degrees on Wednesday.

The weather service in Mobile is warning that the city’s all-time high temperature record could be in jeopardy as well. The record is 105 degrees, set in 2000. The forecast high for Mobile today is 104.

More of the same will be possible in the state on Thursday and into the weekend.

A break could come for the northern part of the state by Sunday, but south Alabama will continue to see above-average temperatures into next week, according to the weather service.

Here is a look at the heat warnings or advisories for Alabama on Wednesday:

NORTH ALABAMA

* Heat advisory until 8 p.m. Thursday for Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, Cullman, Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Marshall, Jackson and DeKalb counties.

The National Weather Service said the heat index could climb as high as 109 degrees in some of those areas today.

CENTRAL ALABAMA

Central Alabama heat

The heat index could hit 112 degrees in parts of central Alabama today.

* Excessive heat warning until 9 p.m. Wednesday and heat advisory from 9 p.m. Wednesday until 9 p.m. Thursday for Lamar, Fayette, Walker, Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Jefferson, Shelby, Sumter, Greene, Hale, Perry, Bibb, Chilton, Coosa, Marengo, Dallas and Autauga counties.

The weather service said for the excessive heat warning heat index values up to 112 will be possible. For the heat advisory, heat index values up to 109 expected on Thursday.

* Excessive heat warning until 9 p.m. Wednesday for Tallapoosa, Lowndes, Elmore, Montgomery, Macon, Bullock, Pike and Barbour counties. Heat index values up to 112 will be possible.

* Heat advisory until 9 p.m. Thursday for Marion, Winston, Blount, St. Clair and Talladega counties. Heat index values up to 108 possible.

* Heat advisory until 9 p.m. Wednesday for Etowah, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Clay, Randolph, Chambers, Lee and Russell counties. Heat index values up to 107 possible.

SOUTH ALABAMA

* Excessive heat warning from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday and heat advisory from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday for Choctaw, Washington, Clarke, Mobile and Baldwin counties.

For the excessive heat warning high temperatures approaching 105 and heat index values up to 113 expected. For the heat advisory, heat index values up to 110 expected.

* Heat advisory from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday for Wilcox, Monroe, Conecuh, Butler, Crenshaw, Escambia and Covington counties. Heat index values up to 112 expected.

* Heat advisory from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. CDT Wednesday for Coffee, Dale, Geneva, Henry and Houston counties. Heat index values up to 110 are expected.
