McNeese State pulled off a 69-67 upset of Clemson in the first round of the 2025 NCAA tournament in Providence, R.I., on Thursday, and Will Wade was very excited about it.

The 12th-seeded Cowboys bounced the No. 5 Tigers to advance to a second-round matchup vs. Purdue on Saturday. McNeese (28-6) led by double-digits most of the game before Clemson (27-7) rallied to make it close at the end.

After the post-game handshake with Clemson coach Brad Brownell, Wade began celebrating wildly at mid-court, pumping his arms repeatedly before bear-hugging both McNeese athletics director Heath Schroyer and school president Wade Rousse and then climbing into the crowd to revel some more. The victory — which came over Wade’s alma mater no less — was the Cowboys’ first in the NCAA tournament as a Division I program.

It has been widely reported that Wade will leave McNeese to become head coach at North Carolina State once the Cowboys’ tournament run ends. After Thursday’s win, however, that move will have to wait at least two more days.
