Will Tropical Storm Philippe head toward New England?

Tropical Storm Philippe was on a path northward in the western Atlantic on Wednesday, and a tropical storm warning was issued for Bermuda.

Phillippe was expected to track near the island on Friday as a tropical storm, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Then Philippe could continue on a path northward and could affect parts of eastern New England and Atlantic Canada over the weekend as a non-tropical system.

The hurricane center cautioned those in eastern New England to keep an eye on Philippe’s track.

“Philippe is likely to move over portions of Atlantic Canada and eastern New England, likely as a post-tropical cyclone, this weekend,” the hurricane center said Wednesday. “Regardless of Philippe’s intensity or structure, interests in those areas should monitor the storm’s progress and be prepared for the possibility of strong winds and heavy rainfall.”

As of 4 p.m. CDT Wednesday, Tropical Storm Philippe was located about 295 miles north of St. Thomas, or 675 miles south of Bermuda, and was moving north at 12 mph.

Philippe was a minimal tropical storm with sustained winds of 40 mph.

The hurricane center said Philippe isn’t expected to become a hurricane but could strengthen some on Friday and Saturday.

Philippe is forecast to continue tracking to the north and could pick up speed over the next few days. On the hurricane center’s forecast track the storm could pass near Bermuda on Friday and approach eastern New England and Atlantic Canada on Saturday.

If that track verifies it would make the second time this season that New England is affected by a storm of tropical origins. The first was Hurricane Lee, which made landfall as an extratropical storm in Nova Scotia on Sept. 7 but brought tropical storm conditions to parts of Massachusetts and knocked out power in Maine.

The hurricane center said Philippe could bring 3 to 6 inches of rain to Bermuda on Thursday and Friday. Philippe has also dumped some rain on parts of the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, but forecasters expect that rain to continue to lessen going into tonight.

Tropical storm conditions will be possible in Bermuda beginning on Friday morning, the hurricane center said.

Philippe was the only storm or disturbance being tracked by the hurricane center on Wednesday. No new storms are expected to develop in the next few days.

The Atlantic hurricane season lasts until Nov. 30.
