Will Tropical Storm Debby become a hurricane? Gulf of Mexico system strengthening on way to Florida
Tropical Storm Debby got stronger overnight as tracked northward on a path toward the Florida Gulf Coast, where hurricane warnings were in effect.
The warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico have allowed Debby to strengthen, and the storm had 60 mph winds as of Sunday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The hurricane center is forecasting Debby to become Category 1 hurricane with winds up to 85 mph by Monday afternoon, when it makes landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region on Monday.
Hurricane conditions will be possible along the Florida coast by Monday morning, forecasters said.
Debby is no threat to the Alabama coast.
After making landfall, Debby is expected to cross over Florida and the Southeast and cause trouble on the Atlantic coast, and tropical storm watches have been added for parts of Georgia and South Carolina in addition to the ones for Florida.
As of 7 a.m. CDT Sunday, the center of Tropical Storm Debby was located about 155 miles southwest of Tampa, Fla., and was moving to the north-northwest at 13 mph.
Debby’s winds were 60 mph, but the hurricane center said the storm was expected to rapidly strengthen before making landfall. The intensity forecast shows Debby peaking with 85 mph winds, which is Category 1 intensity. (Hurricane-force winds begin at 74 mph.)
The hurricane center said that on the forecast path, Debby will continue to track northward in the Gulf today and reach the Florida Big Bend coast Monday morning.
Debby could bring 10 to 12 feet of storm surge to Florida. Parts of Florida and the Southeast could also get 6 to 12 inches of rain, with isolated spots getting as much as 18 inches.
Tornadoes will also be possible today in western and northern Florida as well as South Georgia.
