Will snow fall on Alabama? What to expect from this week’s weather forecast

Winter will return to Alabama this week, and it could bring a few snowflakes along with it.

The National Weather Service is warning that some icy travel could be possible in parts of north and north-central Alabama on Tuesday night through early Thursday as cold temperatures take hold across the state.

The weather service expects what is called a “clipper” system to move through from Tuesday night into Wednesday, bringing increased chances for light precipitation to Alabama.

It is expected to be cold enough across north Alabama to generate some snow. However, most of the rest of the state will get only a cold rain.

The National Weather Service in Huntsville said parts of northwest Alabama could get an inch of snow or more from Tuesday night into Wednesday, with lesser amounts expected for areas to the south and east.

The weather service in Birmingham said mostly showers are expected for central Alabama but there will be a small window for snow mixing with rain or switching over to all snow for the northern part of the region early Wednesday morning.

Forecasters said those areas could see slick spots on the roads:
